About the Program

Over a nine-month period, pastors (and associates) gather in a retreat setting to develop a common language and a frame of reference for the spiritual life. They practice living into community, spiritual disciplines, individual and group spiritual direction. They also interpret all that they as pastors do as spiritual guides: preaching, teaching, pastoral care, leadership, worship planning, congregational life and discernment for the care and nurturing of souls. Additionally, over the course of the program they read four books and one gospel, and write reflection papers. This shared spiritual journey is transformational in profound and practical ways.

Principles and practices of pastors as a spiritual guide are:

  • Growing in our love of God, of others, and of self
  • Believing that God's Spirit is always taking the initiative in our lives and in our churches, and our life is one of response
  • Developing a vision of one's self as a spiritual guide
  • Grounding in the disciplines, especially Bible study and prayer
  • Learning the balance of solitude and community
  • Ministering less in isolation from other pastors or the community of faith
  • Discovering that God is at work in both the weak and strong places in life
  • Leading the congregation in spiritual development and discernment of God's leadership
  • Practicing a language which is inviting rather than demanding
  • Focusing on freedom rather than on control
  • Encouraging the spiritual disciplines and ancient practices such as lectio divina, centering prayer, daily review or examen, contemplative prayer, solitude and Sabbath, journaling and spiritual direction
  • Living into community and experiencing the grace of companionship, collaboration and mutuality
  • Renewing the wonder of our unique calling and joy in serving in Jesus' name
