The hope and heart of the Pastor as Spiritual Guide is captured in its mission statement: "The program is designed to help pastors (and associates) move from “running a church” to embracing their role as a spiritual guide and invites participants to renew their unique calling and their joy in ministry." By attending to the soul of the pastor, he or she is better able to care for souls including the soul of the congregation.
This model for ministry integrates the work of a pastor within the practice of spiritual guidance…”for the equipping of the saints, for the work of ministry, and for building up the body of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:12) These gifts and calling affect everything the pastor does.
"Pastoral work is soul work, whether practiced with individuals or with groups. And every aspect of pastoral activity should serve the overall aim of the spiritual growth of the congregation."
