Program Overview

Selected readings and reflection papers

Assignments to be completed by the participants include selected readings, reflection papers, and a presentation of a concern from the minister’s congregation. How does this reading speak to your spiritual journey? How does it peak to your pastoral ministry? How might you integrate the author’s approach into your spiritual practices and ministry?

Participants are expected to lead a group of congregational members in a series of four to six sessions focused on spiritual growth and the discernment of God’s leadership in the congregation. The resources for the congregational sessions can be based upon a group study of Henri Nouwen's Making All Things New  or Roger Owens, What We Need Is Here: Practicing the Heart of Christian Spirituality.

Each participant is expected to meet with a spiritual guide or spiritual friend once a month for at least five sessions.

Location

All retreats and meetings will be held at St. Francis Springs, located in Stoneville, NC which is approx. 30 miles north of Greensboro, NC. The Prayer Center is a 25,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility situated on 140 acres of beautiful and peaceful wooded property that offers a natural setting for prayer, reflection, and meditation.

Fees

The tuition, housing, and meals total $1400 per person. This fee includes all expenses including books and materials, meals, and lodging for 7 retreats at St Francis Springs, and administrative expenses. Many pastors have used their continuing education budget to help pay for this.

Notes

The Pastor as Spiritual Guide Program is committed to achieving a balance of pastoral leadership position, gender, race, and Christian faith traditions in each of its communities. We reserve the right to accept, decline, or delay admission based on our attempts to achieve this balance. Because of the interactive nature of the program, it will be limited to 12 participants. Our experience is that participants benefit from at least five years of pastoral experience as well as having done readings and workshops in the area of spirituality before beginning this program.
